...to Avrel Art Studio in New York!
Fueled by my exuberance for life and passion for painting, my art is a reflection of my personal life’s journey and my honest reaction to the world around me. Through color, shape, movement, texture, brushstrokes and mark making, I have developed my own unique style. Often building up my paintings with layers of paint and with a variety of materials, I strive to create a balance and rhythm that invite the viewer to take the journey with me.
My paintings have evolved to impressionistic and abstract. During our current pandemic, politics, and BLM, I've also added figurative and narrative paintings in my Unprecedented Times series that reflect my reactions and emotions to the the events of 2020-2021.
My art is often strongly influenced and inspired by the colors, sights, and sounds of the more than 80 countries I have visited. After being immersed in a county's culture, it is not unusual for me to retreat directly to my art studio, even before unpacking my suitcases, in order to channel my latest traveling experience into a statement on canvas. Photographic portraits of the people I've met along my journeys remain in an enriching appreciation for our diversities.
I am gloriously grateful and appreciative that my intuitive feelings and animated style allow me to express my life’s experiences and many adventures through my art! -
Avrel Susan Menkes developed an affinity and love for drawing and painting at a very young age. At 3 years old she greeted visitors to her home with, “Sit down. I draw you.” By 11, Avrel Susan studied under renowned artist and Boston Museum School college professor, Sol Levenson, whom she credits as first inspiring her to paint landscapes through an artist’s eye. She attended the Hartford Art School of the University of Hartford on a full 4 year scholarship where she obtained a BFA in Art Education and a MA in Communications with a concentration in Painting from NY Institute of Technology. She studied post grad at the Santa Reparata International School of Art, Florence, Italy. With a painting residency, she studied under Joan Snyder, who, after seeing her paintings said, " These might be the best landscape paintings I've ever seen!" She is also grateful to The Lab School in Washington DC for choosing her for a most memorable week with Robert Rauschenberg!
Avrel Susan is now a full-time painter in her New York art studio after retiring from teaching art to every grade level in Jericho Public Schools. She had an exciting and rewarding 30 year teaching career, receiving numerous national and international awards and holding local and state positions in art education. Her artistic creations, exhibited in both national and international museums and galleries are also featured in national and international art publications, as well as private collections in the United States, Japan and Canada. A recipient of The Fulbright Scholarship, she created a Peace Mural in a joint venture with an artist in Japan. The finished mural was sent to the White House for the Presidential Library and a copy presented to the Japanese Embassy in New York.
In addition to her once-in-a–lifetime experiences, Avrel Susan’s continual worldwide travels afford her a bird’s eye view onto the various landscapes of the world as inspiration for her paintings, photographs, and mixed media art.
